The Council of the European Union has approved the removal of border controls for Bulgaria and Romania, marking a significant step in their integration into the Schengen Area.

Current Status of the Schengen Area:

The Schengen Area currently encompasses 29 countries, including 25 of the 27 EU member states, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The population of the area is approximately 420 million people.

History of Accession:

Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union 18 years ago, but their full inclusion into the Schengen Area was delayed. In March of this year, these countries partially joined the agreement by becoming part of the so-called "Air Schengen," where passport controls were lifted for travelers crossing borders by air and sea.

Full Integration:

In November 2024, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced preparations for full entry into the Schengen Area. Negotiations regarding the opening of land borders continued throughout 2024, culminating in this long-awaited process.

Security and Requirements:

Reuters notes that Romania and Bulgaria lie on key routes for the illegal trafficking of weapons, drugs, and people. However, after a thorough investigation, the European Commission confirmed that both countries meet all the requirements for Schengen Area membership.
